13 ’90s Rom-Coms you need to watch (or rewatch)

What is romance? Growing up I used to think romance was exactly what I saw in the movies: clumsy, successful, beautiful (but she doesn’t know it) girl meets man of her dreams. They fall in love, life gets in the way, everything falls apart but inevitably they find a way back to each other, and live happily ever after.

It turns out romance is actually a lot more complicated and nuanced than that, and even though real life is messy, falling in love with someone can feel pretty epic and painfully wonderful (and terrible. And wonderful again). Although I agree that rom coms do a really bad job at educating people on real love, and are to blame for a lot of unrealistic romantic expectations, they can also give you an almost giggly feeling that anything is possible, and the world is beautiful, love is worth fighting for and romance is alive. Whenever I need a break from life’s troubles, I turn to one of these heart warming movies and an hour and a half later I’m seeing the world through red tinted, heart shaped glasses and I can even hear the birds sing. Ahh I’m so glad romantic comedies are making a comeback!

Here are 13 90’s rom-coms you must watch every time you need an escape, are feeling happy or sad, on a rainy afternoon, on a random evening after a tough day. Any time is a good time to fall in love with love. It never gets old.
