I don’t know when it all started, but I do remember many years ago when my friends and I spent an entire summer thriving off of samples. There was that time I heard about a new pizza place opening up all the way across town and they were giving away entire pizzas to the first 100 ones that got there. Cut to us getting up at six on a Saturday morning, walking down unknown streets, pizza boxes in hands. Just a bunch of happy kids, cheating the system.
Those were the good old days and the fun part wasn’t getting the free pizza, it was the doing it with your friends. Living life Stand By Me style, suddenly possessed by a strange new sense of braveness and silliness that only happens when surrounded by your friends. When you feel like you can conquer the world or something.
See, that was a while ago and I thought I was mature enough now and over that phase. But I guess I just moved on to the next level of samples obsession: now it’s beauty products. It wasn’t my fault! It all started with the ladies at Shoppers. And then the ladies at Sephora. And friends handing out full bags of skin product samples like it’s no big deal.
I never even cared that much about those tiny bottles of face creams and perfumes. I mean, what was I going to do with one of those? Use it on half of my face? But after months of basically only buying drugstore brands, and suddenly being thrown back to the endless options of moisturisers that is North America, my female instinct was stronger than my common sense and here I am: in possession of a whole bag of tiny samples, completely enamoured by all of them, making an experience out of trying each one every night and day. Guys, I even have my own beauty routine now. I even do thermal water! I’m a grownup!
Now on to the next issue: figuring out which ones to actually buy because it seems they all work great on my skin type. Yep, I know. Blessing in disguise.
