It was all just an accident.
Like any other living and breathing 21st century girl, I’m not at all immune to trends, specially if those trends are all about the 90’s. Give me an oversized t-shirt, a pair of mom jeans and a good old belt and I’m ready to head out the door. I absolutely love the combo!
So a few weeks ago, when I was getting ready for brunch, I went for the classic look: Veda from My Girl. I mean, just take a quick look below to see what I’m talking about. She absolutely rocks the look! You can’t see it in the picture, but I was wearing New Balance sneakers and my favourite pair of mom jeans. I wasn’t wearing a belt because I’m still on the hunt for the perfect one, and my old ones are all falling apart, but overall I was pretty happy with the final look.
But then I took a look outside and it seemed cold enough. So a chunky sweater it is! As soon as I walked outside though, I was once again reminded that the Toronto weather can change drastically at any given minute, therefore it was no longer cold, it was actually pretty hot. Cut to me having to carry around this heavy sweater everywhere.
This seem like such an unnecessary tangent, and it is, but bear with me we’re getting to the point of all of this babbling. In attempt to embrace my poor outfit choice I decided to tie the sweater over my shoulder like a preppy school boy, blissfuly making fun of myself. My friends certainly were having a laugh at my granny look the minute I showed up anyways.
Little did I know that one can go from a 90’s look to a preppy boy look to a granny grunge style with just a few accessories! With the help of some funky glasses I saw at a thrift store this is how I ended up looking:
Like Sylvia Weinstock! Like Iris Apfel!
Basically like a badass businesswoman. So the joke’s on you, my laughing friends.
And if you want to get the look, this is all you need: a comfy h&m man’s shirt, mom jeans, an old pair of sneakers, a chunky sweater over your shoulder and a fun, funky, too-cool-for-you pair of sunglasses and voila!
