A personal tragedy in my life is losing weight. While the vast majority of the human population is always striving to lose weight, there’s some of us who face the exact opposite. That’s when gaining weight is just as hard as losing weight for some. After months of zero exercise and failing to follow my regular diet, the inevitable quickly happened: I lost a lot of weight. Now that I’m trying to go back to my normal ways, shakes are part of my routine again.
I’m not the biggest fan of protein shakes, but you gotta do what you gotta do. High calorie smoothies and protein shakes pack a lot of calories so they are a great addition to your diet if you’re trying to gain a few pounds. Instead of having them as meal replacements I actually have them as extra meals – usually taking them about half an hour before or after a workout.
I find the best way to not get bored of my protein shake is to change things up and pimp an otherwise boring shake. I’m constantly on the lookout for new ideas and there are a number of ways to add good natural sources of calorie to your shake or smoothie. My favourite combo recently has been a very simple one:
Greek yogurt is a great source of protein and I always go for the full fat version. Oats are high in fiber and protein, while a medium sized banana contains an average of 105 calories. The strawberries are mostly for colour and fun honestly, but berries just make everything better. I eyeball all the ingredients and add whole milk – for that extra dose of fat content, and there you go. It doesn’t taste so bad anymore!
How do you step up your smoothie game? I need new ideas!
