A Star is Born

As I write this I have always remember us this way by Lady Gaga playing in the background. I’ve been listening to the A Star is Born soundtrack on repeat since I watched the movie last weekend.

So let’s back up a little. It’s a sunny Saturday morning and I hop on a bus headed to the Netherlands. It’s hard to watch movies in Germany because they only show the dubbed version in theaters, and as of now my German is -still-horrible. So that’s a no no. Travelling to the Netherlands to watch a movie sounds like an effort, but I don’t mind: as it turns out I’m pretty close to the border. The ride there is beautiful and the destination, Nijmegen, is the oldest city in the country and is always bursting with energy.

I’m by myself. I’ve been hearing about A Star is Born here and there, and when I watched the trailer a few weeks ago I was mesmerized and knew I had to watch it. So as part of challenging myself every week I figure this could be a good start: nothing too big, but sill a little out of my comfort zone. It’s mid afternoon now and other than myself, there’s only one girl in the theater, which is alright I guess, since I know I’m about to cry my eyes out, so it’s better this way.

So here’s the deal: don’t watch A Star is Born if you’re feeling slightly homesick or sad!! It’ll just break your heart. But then again if that’s the case, then you should probably really watch it because it’ll leave you heartbroken in the most beautiful way. As I left the theater, watery-eyed and pensive, I was so glad I had come all the way to see it on my own, because some movies do feel like an experience. And here are some things it got me thinking about:

Anything can happen in life and everything can change in just one day.

Ally had pretty much given up on her dreams and then one encounter changed everything. It can happen that fast, and we never know what the future has in store. Sometimes things seem so far, but one person, one opportunity, one second can literally change everything. Lady Gaga said about her own experience: “There can be 100 people in the room, and 99 don’t believe in you and just one does. And Bradley Cooper believed in me, and I wouldn’t be here without him today”

Be with someone who sees you for who you are and believes in you.

Both Ally and Jackson are flawed and complicated, but they see something in each other than no one else does. And they stick with each other through thick and thin. It’s beautiful to watch how they’re so committed to each other despite hardships and flaws, and we see a lot of that in the movie.

Music can heal you.

The soundtrack is absolutely beautiful. It’s another character in the film, and if you pay close attention you’ll see how much they speak their truth through their songs. And the songs that break your heart are the same ones that heal you.

Don’t ever give up on your dreams.

Ally was on the verge of letting go of her dreams. She was seeking permission and validation, instead of believing in herself and just go for it. But wonderful things can happen if you stick to it long enough. And the tricky thing is even when you get there, life will still be full of ups and downs, but if you know your purpose and intention you won’t lose yourself along the way.

As I read somewhere, A Star is Born is “sheer emotional devastation”. Get your tissues ready.
