In defense of not responding to texts

I’m notorious for being the friend who takes forever to text back. It used to be terribly annoying to my friends: my persistence in blissfully ignore whatever text that came my way, if only for a couple hours. Don’t get me wrong, I never did it on purpose, I’m just not glued to my phone 24/7 and honestly, sometimes I just need a break. The pressure to reply to texts instantly can be exhausting, but here’s the twist…

…sometimes I’m the annoying friend who can’t stop texting, and more often than not I find myself frantically waiting for a response! I know! It’s very hard to explain the complexities of being human…

But isn’t it crazy how we’re somehow expected to drop everything to reply a text, a DM, and what about those blue WhatsApp ticks? When you know you are being ignored! You have evidence. Undeniable evidence! This whole thing can be very anxiety-inducing and stressful. The internet and smartphones have changed the rules of etiquette and we’re still learning how to deal with it all.

This is going to sound ridiculous, but I swear my thumb is permanently sore from typing – and that even has a name now, it’s called texting thumb. And that’s actually painful. But let me explain. I love text conversations! I have spent hours and hours texting with friends and it’s great. I just don’t want to feel obligated. Sometimes I don’t want to be available, I want to be free from technology, and I’ll be totally okay if you’re not available either. Feel free to ignore me, friend! But only sometimes, let’s not get carried away here. I have friends who have taken so long to reply to my messages that by the time they wrote back I had completely forgotten where we had left off, but I forgive them. We were probably discussing something very pressing like favourite ice cream flavours anyway.

I guess sometimes I just want to exist and not text.

But I will text you back. Eventually.

I feel the same, sometimes I just pretend like I don’t even have a cellphone. If it’s important, just call me! Oh wait, I hate picking up phone calls.
